A defensible certification framework built on three principles: objective rules, ingredient-level precision, and structured data at scale.
For Clarity.
Every product is evaluated against fixed, predefined criteria applied consistently across all assessments. There is no weighting system, interpretive scoring, or subjective adjustment.
For Trust.
All outcomes are determined at the individual ingredient level — not by brand reputation, marketing claims, or portfolio-wide assumptions. Every ingredient is decoded, classified, and assessed independently.
For a Better Industry.
Ingredient Clarity Lab is powered by 60,000+ classified ingredients across 110 product categories, including skin care, body care, color cosmetics, and fragrance. Evaluations incorporate regulatory status, environmental and ethical flags, source type, and global frameworks including MoCRA and EU regulations.

The Clarity Gap
In a landscape filled with broad language and inconsistent standards, there is little clarity on what sustainability claims actually mean.
LUMA Clarity brings that into the light — translating broad claims into measurable, verifiable conditions, where clarity can actually be established.

Environmental Fate & Impact
LUMA Cycle evaluates how ingredients behave after use, applying defined criteria across biodegradability, microplastic classification, and environmental impact indicators.
What is evaluated
- Ingredient biodegradability and environmental persistence
- Ability of ingredients to break down through natural microbial processes
- Available biodegradability testing data (e.g. OECD 301 standards)
- Potential for long-term accumulation in ecosystems
- Risk of ingredients being classified as persistent or bioaccumulative substances
Does Not Meet Criteria if
- Ingredients are identified as persistent or insufficiently biodegradable

Built to Define What Can Be Verified
Ingredient Clarity Lab replaces ambiguous beauty claims with a system that can be applied, tested, and explained at the ingredient level. Most standards in beauty rely on interpretation of language, intent, or incomplete information — we built Ingredient Clarity Lab to remove that ambiguity through fixed criteria, structured data, and ingredient-level analysis.
What does Ingredient Clarity Lab certify?
Cosmetic formulations, evaluated at the ingredient level against three pillars: LUMA Clarity (claim verification and regulatory alignment), LUMA Life (cruelty-free and vegan), and LUMA Cycle (biodegradability, microplastics, microbeads, and aquatic/marine impact). Each LUMA Life and LUMA Cycle badge is awarded pass/fail against fixed, rule-based criteria — no weighting, no subjective scoring.
How much does certification cost?
Pricing is structured per pillar and per scope:
- Free Pre-Check and the Anti-Greenwashing™ Pledge — free
- LUMA Life — 120 € per product, per year (covers all eligible LUMA Life badges, including size variations of the same formulation)
- LUMA Cycle — 120 € per product, per year (covers all eligible LUMA Cycle badges, including size variations)
- Retail Ready™ — €500 per evaluation of 50 products
- Global Check™ — €1,000 per evaluation of 50 products
What is the Free Pre-Check LUMA Pulse?
A no-commitment way to see which certifications your formulation qualifies for. LUMA Pulse is a free pre-check analysis designed to help you quickly understand which sustainability and environmental certifications may apply to your formulation — at no cost. By reviewing your product's ingredient profile and environmental impact, LUMA Pulse gives you an early-stage assessment. It uses the same rule-based engine and 60,000+ ingredient database that powers paid certification.
What is the Anti-Greenwashing™ Pledge?
Go with Ingredient Clarity Lab for a Beauty Industry without Greenwashing. Sign a free public commitment under LUMA Clarity and pledge your commitment. Brands that formally adopt the Pledge and demonstrate ongoing alignment with its 8 principles — across product claims, ingredient transparency, packaging, and brand communication — earn the certification at no cost.
How long does certification take?
Because evaluation is fully digital and rule-based and runs against a structured database of 60,000+ classified ingredients (154 flags per ingredient, 110 product categories), assessment begins as soon as the ingredient list and any required documentation are submitted in the correct format. Submissions that are not ingredient-formatted will delay evaluation.
Can I certify multiple products?
Yes. Each formulation is evaluated independently. A single LUMA Life or LUMA Cycle subscription covers all size variations of the same formulation under one annual fee.
Can I resubmit after reformulating?
Yes. Reformulated products can be re-evaluated at any time as a new formulation under a new certification subscription annual fee.
Where are certified results published?
Certified products are published to our public vault, where consumers and retailers find verified brands, and to our partner programs such as Inference Beauty's Clean Beauty Program. Failed evaluations remain private and are only visible to the submitting brand inside their account.
Is Ingredient Clarity Lab a regulatory authority?
No. Ingredient Clarity Lab provides independent, rule-based product certification based on defined criteria. It does not replace regulatory authorities, provide toxicology opinions, or grant legal clearance — regulatory compliance remains the responsibility of the brand.
Which retailer standards does the method cover?
LUMA Clarity Retail Ready™ checks against seven retailer clean-concept standards: Target Zero, Ulta Conscious Beauty, Macy's Conscious Beauty, Clean at Sephora / Planet Aware at Sephora, Credo Clean Standard™ / The Dirty List, Bluemercury Conscious Beauty, and Niche Beauty. These standards are subject to change, so the certification is indicative and not a guarantee to be accepted by the retailer.
Which markets does the method cover?
LUMA Clarity Global Check™ screens ingredients against banned and restricted lists across nine jurisdictions: United States, European Union, Canada, Australia, UAE, China, Japan, Korea, and South America.
Do you take a position on what is "clean" or "safe"?
No. "Clean" and "safe" are context-dependent and regulated differently across jurisdictions, product categories, and ingredient concentrations. Rather than label ingredients as universally good or bad, we evaluate against defined rules, ingredient references, retailer standards, and badge-specific criteria. Our position is straightforward: beauty claims should be specific, substantiated, and understandable.
Can brands influence the outcome?
No. All LUMA Life and LUMA Cycle badges are awarded on a strict pass/fail basis against rule-based criteria. Brands may submit documentation (such as a Product Information File or supplier declarations) when required, but they cannot alter rules, bypass requirements, or purchase a favorable outcome. This protects the credibility of the certification system.
Can the method validate broad sustainability claims?
Only when those claims map to a defined badge. We verify specific, evidence-based claims such as Breaks Down Safely™, Microplastic-Free™, Microbead-Free™, Ocean-Friendly™, and Waterway-Friendly™, all tied to ingredient references and documented criteria. We do not audit supply chains, carbon impact, packaging systems, manufacturing practices, labor conditions, or full lifecycle assessments unless those areas are explicitly included in a defined badge standard.
Do I have to pay for a product that does not pass the evaluation?
No. You first analyze all your products by signing up and seeing each evaluation in your dashboard. You can then subscribe per product as you go and see fit. No baseline cost, no commitment before evaluation.
